Plywood is one of the materials with exceptionally diverse applications that can be used as construction formwork, product packaging, pallets for the marine industry, or furniture manufacturing. One of the most popular types of boards is the 4×8 Plywood board. Let’s learn about this type of board through the article below.
What is 4×8 plywood?
4×8 sheet of plywood stands for “4-foot x 8-foot plywood”. People used to call plywood by its default size, where the foot is the international unit of measurement, which is defined as equal to 0.3048 meters (equivalent to 304.8 millimeters). The international standard notation is “ft,” so a size of 4 x 8 ft would equate to a size of 1220 x 2440 mm.
Like other types of boards, 4×8 plywood is made from veneered boards, which are bonded together by a special glue. Following this, it is pressed and dried at a high temperature, so it has many advantages compared to natural wood, such as:
- No warping or shrinking is possible due to high heat and water resistance.
- Smooth and flat surface, easy to use.
- High-quality elasticity, anti-adhesion, saving construction costs and time.
- Easy to manufacture into products with high aesthetics.
Classification of plywood
There are four main types of 4×8 plywood in terms of surface level: A, B, C, and D. Each board has two sides and can be used simultaneously with two levels, such as AB and BC. The first letter refers to the front veneer. The second letter refers to the back. Plywood in Vietnam is often classified by surface.
Grade A: This is the highest quality plywood surface and costs the most. The board’s surface is flat and smooth, and it can be painted directly.
Grade B: This surface is slightly less smooth than grade A. The surface may have minor defects that have been corrected. Type B may also have some knots of 2-3cm in diameter or some minor flaws.
Grade C: The surface is unevenly colored with knots measuring 2-3 cm in diameter.
Grade D: This is the cheapest plywood. Surface defects have not been corrected, with knots up to 5 cm.
Specifications 4×8 sheet of Plywood
There are many different plywood sizes available. However, the most commonly used is 4ft x 8 ft. You can also cut it into smaller sizes according to your needs.
When it comes to specifications, with the exception of dimensions, the thickness of the plywood also needs to be considered. The thickness of plywood is related to its durability and is the most important thing to consider when buying plywood. Plywood will be suitable for each different project depending on its thickness. There are many types of thickness, but the most popular are 8mm, 5mm, and 10mm.
